Domestic abuse is an incident or pattern of incidents of controlling coercive, sexual, threatening, degrading and violent behavior. Domestic abuse can be perpetrated by a partner, ex partner, carer or family member.
Women are more likely than men to experience incidents of domestic abuse. Women can experience domestic abuse regardless of race, ethnicity, religious group, sexuality, class and disability.
Women who experience other forms of oppression and discrimination may face barriers in disclosing abuse and finding help.
Domestic abuse includes different forms of family violence such as forced marriage, female genital mutilation (FGM) and so called "honor based crimes" that are perpetrated primarily by family members, often with multiple perpetrators. Psychological and emotional abuse affects the mind and emotions. This type of abuse is common which often leads to depression.
Statistics show that the effects and actions of domestic abuse can be traumatizing and detrimental to the health and overall wellbeing of the victim.
